Brendan - Business Manager, Protection

"I joined the business in 2003 as an Administrator in Health Claims. After a year I moved into Practice Protection which helped broaden my experience and led to promotion from Senior Practice Protection Administrator to Acting Team Manager.

I also worked with the IT and Sales Operations departments on a six month secondment looking at how a new Point of Sale system would affect new business administration. This experience helped me earn promotion to Pensions New Business Manager and now, Business Manager - Protection, which I started in September 2011.

This is an evolving role - moving away from day-to-day team management and getting involved at a more strategic level. I'm responsible for my own budget and making medium to long term plans to support Wesleyan's overall three to five year business plan. My main focus is on ensuring high quality service delivery and profitability for the Protection business, which involves staff engagement, development and succession planning as well as maintaining relationships with medical evidence suppliers.

By helping them to meet new business targets I know that I'm able to make a real - and valued - contribution to Wesleyan achieving its goals. I also help to mitigate risk by managing and embedding risk controls and looking at how this affects other areas of the business.

Over the years I've benefited from the guidance of my managers, with plenty of support and challenges at the right level. Performance management, key skills development and coaching have aided my progression, and Wesleyan have also supported me to gain CF1, CF2 and FA2 qualifications. I'm currently studying for FA1.

What do I like best about working here? It's not overly bureaucratic, so you have the ability to make a real difference to the business. Having one Head Office has many advantages, and it's not hierarchical - you can talk directly to key decision makers in many areas and actually get things done. I've found Wesleyan to be an open organisation that rewards and values individual performance. It's also a friendly environment, and the building and city centre location are great too.

To be successful here, you need to be motivated, professional and honest. You should also be able to recognise that secondments and sideways moves can help you progress - you need to be open to new ideas. And, if you're prepared to work hard, you'll be rewarded, financially as well as professionally."
